Ristband Returns To SXSW With Its Music Metaverse

March 8, 2023 From vrscout

The party returns on March 12th live via the metaverse.

The South by Southwest (SXSW) Conference and Festival draws everything from up-and-coming music artists and interactive media companies to forward-thinking startups and various other cutting-edge technologies.

One of the companies featured this year is Ristband which will once again be hosting its Music Metaverse, a virtual event that combines the energy of live music with VR technology. Performing at the event will be the UK-based “collective,” Miro Shot.

During SXSW 2022, I talked with Roman Rappak, CEO of Ristband and singer for Miro Shot, who told me how he was influenced by bands such as Kraftwerk and how they embraced “weird technology that was broken and hard to use and made music with it.”

This year, Miro Shot will be returning to SXW and will be presenting a completely revamped version of their concert, which will feature brand-new music and the latest in XR technology.

“With SXSW’s international reputation as a festival supporting emerging culture and technology under one roof, we are excited to have the opportunity to extend the festival in the metaverse with the true pioneers of this new digital era: the artists who are the driving force of this movement,” said Anne McKinnon, CEO of Ristband.

This year’s Music Metaverse showcase promises attendees an unforgettable experience that will expand the magic of SXSW.  Ristband’s official Music Metaverse event will answer questions such as how the metaverse will impact the live music industry and how contemporary artists are using AR/VR as well as the metaverse to reach new audiences. Along with the performance, Ristband’s event will feature a variety of discussions about how the metaverse will affect the industry.

Last year, Miro Shot used older Android devices to drop attendees into a VR environment that reacted with the band’s instruments as they played live. This year, Miro Shot partnered with HTC VIVE to immerse their audiences in a virtual world using HTC’s new all-in-one headset, the VIVE XR Elite.

“Live music and physical events are at the heart of music culture, while at the same time, exciting new tools that can extend our concert into VR and a gaming platform like Ristband have had an incredibly powerful effect on the reach of our band,” said Rappak.

To attend the event, individuals must be 21+ and have an SXSW festival pass. The event will be held at The Venue ATX, which is a 5-minute walk away from the Convention Center. Oh, and you’ll have to RSVP!

Gorillaz Will Perform An AR Concert In NYC & London

December 14, 2022 From vrscout

2-D, Russel, Murdoc, and Noodle are back and bigger than ever.

Ahead of the release of their 8th studio album entitled Cracker Island, the virtual band Gorillaz will perform an augmented reality (AR) concert in New York City and London during which the band members will appear as enormous, skyscraper-sized virtual avatars.

The event will take place this weekend and will be accessible via the Gorillaz Presents app available free on iOS and Android. The Grammy award-winning group will perform their new single “Skinny Ape” at Times Square in NYC at 2:30 pm ET on December 17th and in Piccadilly Circus at 2:00 pm GMT on December 18th.

The location-based AR experience is powered by Google’s ARCore Geospatial API, which allows developers to tether digital content to real-world locations covered by Google Street View. This musical AR event will blend virtual elements with reality, immersing spectators in a unique mixed reality experience.

This isn’t the first time the fictional band has experimented with immersive technology. Back in April 2017, Gorillaz launched their own mixed reality app that offered fans an interactive tour of their “unique” estate. Prior to that, the group released a 360-degree music video for their song “Saturnz Barz.”

Those lucky enough to find themselves in NYC or London this weekend can download the Gorillaz Presents app for free via the App Store and Google Play. After the “live” performance, you can watch the show in-app any time you’d like.

Biggie VR Concert Will Feature ‘Hyper-Realistic’ Avatar

November 16, 2022 From vrscout

With guest performances by Sean “Diddy” Combs, The Lox, and more.

Meta today announced the latest in its series of immersive VR concerts, The Notorious B.I.G. Sky’s The Limit: A VR Concert Experience. Coming next month to Horizon Worlds, the one-of-a-kind show will bring the late Brooklyn rapper to life like never before in celebration of what would have been his 50th birthday.

On December 16th, those with a Meta Quest 2 or Meta Quest Pro headset can log in to Horizon Worlds, Meta’s social VR metaverse, to catch an immersive VR concert featuring a “hyper-realistic avatar” of the late great rapper along with guest performances by Sean “Diddy” Combs, The Lox, Latto, Nardo Wick, Lil’ Cease, DJ Clark Kent, and more.

The experience will also feature a narrative portion, during which you’ll learn more about the life of the hip-hop legend. Written and voiced by American writer and music journalist Touré, this eye-opening journey will take you through The Brook, a virtual recreation of ’90s Brooklyn.

When asked how the project came to be, Touré said, “I’ve worked with producer Alex Coletti on several projects over many years and I also interviewed Biggie several times, so Alex thought I could be helpful at bringing this to life.”

“We wanted to create a concert that had other aspects to it, so it was on me to figure out a pre-concert scene and a post-concert scene. It was a lot of fun trying to imagine what Big would be like and what he might be doing if he were still with us today.”

“It’s very exciting to be able to give people immersive experiences, so if VR can develop to the point where I can be at home but have the feeling of being in the front row of a concert and really feel like I’m there, that would be a really exciting opportunity,” he added.

The Notorious B.I.G. Sky’s The Limit: A VR Concert Experience will kick off on December 16th in Horizon Worlds, available free on Meta Quest 2 and Meta Quest Pro. A 2D version of the show will be available to view on-demand via the official Notorious B.I.G. Facebook page.

Sensorium Launches 24-Hour Metaverse Streaming Channel

August 10, 2022 From vrscout

Empyreal Parties 24/7 promises an unreal multi-sensory experience.

The multi-sensory VR platform Sensorium is launching what they claim is the first in-engine metaverse streaming channel, offering an out-of-this-world visual and audio experience like no other. The 24/7 livestream metaverse experience will take you on a journey through multiple locations across the Sensorium Galaxy metaverse.

To kick it all off, Sensorium is hosting its first Empyreal Party at the remote Meteor Vortex with virtual AI artists Kàra Màr, Natisa Sitar, and Ninalis performing aboard a levitating concert module that will transport you into a sublime visual experience featuring sick beats from AI artist and virtual beings.

Each AI-DJ is able to create music that pulls inspiration from over 60 different genres. They are also capable of interacting with the audience in VR.

Immediately following the inaugural Meteor Vortex event, Sensorium will launch two other Empyreal Parties that will take you to the volcanic surface of PRISM world and the stunning interiors of the Sensorium Starship.

Accessing Sensorium’s out-of-this-world event is easy. No VR headset is required; simply jump in using a web browser of your choice. That said, headphones are highly recommended, as this is an audio-driven experience.

In addition to accessing the world on a desktop, you’ll also be able to tune into Empyreal Parties through the Sensorium mobile app which is available for both Apple and Android devices.

Leading up to this milestone metaverse event, Sensorium showcased its lineup of virtual beings at cutting-edge conferences and festivals such as WebSummit, SXSW, and Sonar.

In 2021, Sensorium kickstarted the idea of virtual artists being powered through AI with the debut of Kàra Màr’s “Anthropic principle“. The AI-driven character has music streaming on Apple Music, Spotify, and SoundCloud.

Today’s premier launch is just the beginning for Sensorium Galaxy. In addition to exploring the idea of AI-DJs, they will also host VR shows with real-world artists such as David Guetta, Black Coffee, Steve Aoki, Armin van Burren, and many others.

If you’d like to learn more, head on over to the Sensorium Galaxy website. You can check out the livestream itself here.

You can download the Sensorium Galaxy app today on iOS and Google Play and jump in-world to listen anytime!
